This weekend, July 9/10, the 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time, we’ll use a different kind of Responsorial Psalm. It utilizes one of the most ancient psalm tones, type 3 of the 3 primitive types. This is a tone that is probably closely related to the tones (if not one of the actual ones) to come over to Christianity from the Synagogue in the time of the Apostles. You’ll notice that it begins with a verse, and then the response follows organically. This is in keeping with the original form of the Responsorial Psalm which St. Augustine mentions. Christopher Berry has composed this setting using musical materials from the Graduale Simplex, an official Vatican publication, and utilizing the text from the Lectionary.
